UNIXの1968年から1973年にかけての初期開発の歴史を概観した論文。本論文では下記のように、開発当時の社会的状況とともに、ファイルシステム、プロセス制御機構、そしてパイプライン化されたコマンドという概念の発展などが論じられている。UNIXは1974年にその概要が初めて公表されて以来、大幅な書き直しや細かな改良が加えられてきたが、根本的な変更はほとんど行われていない。しかし、UNIXが誕生したのは1974年ではなく1969年であり、その開発の経緯はあまり知られていないものの、示唆に富む物語である。本論文では、このシステムの発展における技術的および社会的な歴史を述べる。
本論文の内容はもともとは、オーストラリアのシドニーで1979年7月に開催されたThe Language Design and Programming Methodology conferenceでの講演に基づくものである。（Lecture Notes in Computer Science #79:Language Design and Programming Methodology, Springer-Verlag, 1980に収録されている。）
